STEP 1

USE YOUR SAFETY EQUIPMENT

Well, some people think they have all the intelligence to use a chainsaw just like the way they would handle something harmful thinking an injury would never happen to them. But, that’s wrong. It is better to put your ego aside than to get cut. It is advisable that whenever you want to work with the machine, you wear long pants, very steel – designed boots, helmets, safety goggles, and gloves. You could also read what is on the manual. With those, you are to go.

STEP 2

CUT THE STUMP SO LOW

As I mentioned earlier, some folks leave the stump after cutting which is dangerous. While you firmly cut, make a horizontal cut through the tree and make sure it is as low as possible and do not exempt the limbs that may fall off when you cut. Also, be careful when you cut so that the chain does not ricochet when you do it to the ground. It is easy but instruction filled.

STEP 3

EXPOSE THE ROOTS

Of course, the stump after being cut will have dirt around it. So, you will clean it up, probably with a towel and expose the roots which would require digging into the ground for a good exposure.

STEP 4

CUT THROUGH THE ROOTS

Then, you can carefully use the chainsaw to cut through the roots you have exposed earlier. This process may reduce the blades’ sharpness so you carefully remove the dirt first to avoid any causalities

STEP 5

DRAW THE STUMP OUT

This is the most important part of the whole work whereby you pull the stump out, you could use your hand for that and make sure there is no root holding it in the ground. You can thereby use the chainsaw if you spot any loose root or attached one.

STEP 6

STOP THE CHAINSAW

People get all excited after successfully removing the stump and forget to stop the blade from running. Well, you may have stopped the stump but might still get cut if you are careless. Stop the chain saw an carry on with whatever you have left to do.

How to cut a tree on the ground with a chainsaw

This will be a handy how to guide on how to cut a tree on the ground. Usually when it comes to chainsaws, BackyardForests.org would not recommend working on the ground, it’s really bad for your back, and the risk of injury increases. However, unless you happen to be incredible hulk, you probably won’t be able to lift up an entire tree. For this tutorial, safety is most vital! Make sure you have the correct protective equipment such as a hard hat and goggles, and stand side on to stop your leg coming off should you accidentally slip.

In order to make anything out of wood, you’ll have to turn the logs into lumber. But logs don’t appear out of thin air, they are cut from trees. Once you’ve cut the tree down, you’ll need to cut it up into logs, turn the logs into lumber, and use that lumber to create beautiful products. And because of the size of most trees the only way that you can realistically turn them into logs is to work from the ground. This is more or less the only time in woodwork, you should be working from the ground.

How to cut a tree on the ground with a chainsaw

Step One: Mark the tree

First thing is to mark your tree. This will decide how long your logs are going to be. Remember your logs will be the same length as your lumber. Make sure it’s long enough so that you’ll be able to actually use it, as lumber which is too small will be very difficult to work with. But don’t make it too long either as this will make it very difficult to carry.

There isn’t a right or wrong way to mark a tree, some people like to use spray paint, others use a manual saw, and you can even get a special tool made for marking trees.

Step Two: Cutting into the tree

When you first cut into the tree, don’t go horizontal, doing this may cause the chainsaw to bounce off. Which can result in a very serious injury.

What you need to do is cut in at an angle, to do this, just place the bottom of the saw against the top of the marking, making sure it’s facing an upwards angle, and from here cut inwards.

From this point, slowly move the saw down, until it has become horizontal. Take your time with this, as rushing can be highly hazardous!

Step Three: Cut ¾ of the way down

At this point, you might be tempted to cut all the way down. Don’t!

Not only will this take longer, it will also make it more likely that you hurt yourself.

What you should do is cut down about ¾ of the way through the tree. Once you’ve reached that point, slowly and careful take the chainsaw out of the tree. If you’re too quick, it might hit you in the face, which won’t be very nice at all. But as long as your careful, risk of such an injury happening is very low.

With your chainsaw out, repeat for the rest of the markings, then put your chainsaw to one side.

Step Four: Roll it

You’ll now have to roll the tree over so that the side facing up has about half a cut of it. This will make it easy to safe for you to cut all the way though.

As with marking, there isn’t a right way or wrong way to roll the tree over. If you’re able to, you can push it over (use gloves if you do this) or kick it over with your feet (use strong shoes if you do this). If you want to be a bit more professional, you can use a special device known as a felling lever.

Step Five: Finish the cut

Pick your chainsaw back up again, and again, come infront an angle to prevent any sort of ping back. But unlike the first cuts, this time, cut all the way down. At the end of each cut, you won’t need to take your chainsaw out, you will be able to just lift it up. Repeat until you have cut all of the markings. Just make sure to take your time, and being even slower when you reach the bottom of the log.

You’ve now cut your tree into logs, check out our tutorials on how to turn logs into lumber, which you can use to make bookshelves, tables, or anything else. Once the tree has been made into logs, the limits to what they can be used for are your skills and imagination. But before you do anything, just take a rest, maybe even leave the using of the logs for another day, as you’re probably tired from cutting up the tree.

To recap!

In order to do anything with a fallen tree, you’ll first have to cut it into logs. Always wear the correct safety equipment, and take a rest if you feel tired. For safety, don’t ever rush this job, and if you’re new, best get some assistance from someone with more experience.

1. Draw the markings onto the fallen tree

2. Cut in at an angle, and move the saw down until it’s horizontal.

3. Cut ¾ of the way down the log.

4. Roll the log over.

5. Saw all the way down

6. Use the logs.

Before the days of the chainsaw, people would have to use a manual saw, this would take a long time, and make logging the tree into an extremely tiresome task, thankfully, due to modern technology, it can be done much quicker and much easier.

And the quicker you have your logs, the quicker you can turn them into the things you want to.
